The people of Estonia voted to approve joining the European Union.

Sixty-six percent of voters approved the decision in a country-wide referendum. Estonia eventually joined the EU on May 1, 2004.

Hindi became the official language of India.

This day is now celebrated yearly as a national holiday and is known as Hindi Day.
