Starting my own law firm was life-changing, both professionally and personally. I started my firm, Airington Law, as a new (then-divorced) mom with an infant. I loved being a lawyer, and I wanted to continue practicing, but I needed more control over my career. Over the next few years, I slowly built up my practice and eventually developed a vision for growing a successful and family-friendly law firm. I immersed myself in learning everything I could about running a law practice as a business. Today, we are a thriving immigration firm based in Virginia that remains true to the original vision of a profitable but family-friendly office. After reading that many women leave law mid-career because of work/life pressure, I realized that I wanted to do more to support other women lawyers and firm owners. I wrote my book, Mom’s A Lawyer: How to Start a Firm and Take Control of Your Life, as the blueprint I wish I had when I first started my practice. Today, in addition to serving as the executive of Airington Law, I also run Lawyer Like a Mother™ and coach other lawyers who want to start or scale a family-friendly law firm. My passion is supporting entrepreneurship in women attorneys to drive change within the legal profession. Miriam Airington-Fisher. (Full article...)
